WATER BASED EMOTIONS
One of the challenges of using watercolors is developing the ability to relinquish control and embrace happy accidents as they come. In this painting, I used different levels of wetness to create drips that emphasize mood and personality.

THE WATER CRISIS
The lack of undo's in the real world (that would be great, right?) forced me to plan ahead at every step of this painting. To take advantage of the painterly medium, I chose strategic spots to leave rough to keep some of the original spirit of the design.

Carravagio Reimagined
HIGH DRAMA, HIGH CONTRAST
Out of all the Baroque painters, Caravaggio is my favorite. I often think of what subject matter he would tackle if he were living and painting today. I made this piece while working for Blizzard during the day and taking a couple of art history classes at night.
Renaissance 2.0
I have always been fascinated by those enormous, epic, Civil War paintings and have wondered how an artist would even start planning this kind of painting, interweaving its different story points, poses, and lighting without ending up pulling out his or her hair. The challenge here was controlling the details and keeping a very strict hierarchy of focal points that maintained a structured order inside the scene's chaos.

ALGORITHM-BASED ATTITUDE
With the rise of AI and computer processing power, online presence has become more and more dominant in everyday life. I tried to create an image of how future social media might present individuals, when flat profile pictures will be out of date and photo-realistic avatars and digital fashion will take their place.
Digital Personality
Besides the evolution of online appearance, the online method of expressing emotions will probably evolve beyond five different reaction emojis. I imagined how this interaction might look and how emotions could be shown through digital avatars in a more explicit way than hitting the like/heart button.

After years of browsing through Eyvind Earle's books and watching re-runs of Sleeping Beauty, I finally got to visit Eyvind Earle's gallery in Laguna Beach and see his painting in full scale. I spent the following weekend trying to re-imagine his shape language in a more realistic fashion.
